Bean bag toss or cornhole is a lawn game where players toss bags at a raised, inclined board with a hole in its far middle end. The game aims to score points by either landing a bean bag on the board or putting a bag through the hole.

What are the Bean Bag Toss Rules?

Cornhole is played with two teams, each consisting of one player (singles) or two players (doubles). Players pitch their bags underhand from the pitcher's box next to each side of the board. Players alternate turns, tossing their cornhole bags toward the opposite board. After each team has pitched four bags, players take score and resume tossing to the opposite board. In the following inning, the team that scored points in the previous set gets to go first. If it was a tie, the team who went first in the last inning gets to go first again.

How is Bean Bag Toss Scored?

Cornhole bags that go through the hole are worth 3 points. A cornhole bag that lands on the board and stays there is worth 1 point. Bags that land on the ground or bounce onto the board are worth 0 points. Only one team can score points per set. The team with the higher score cancels out the opposing team's points in that inning. The team with the higher score in an inning earns the difference in points. For instance, if Team A scores 5 points and Team B scores 2 points in an inning, Team A earns 3 points for that inning.

How to Pick Out the Best Cornhole Board

Cornhole boards are mostly made of hardwood plywood but can also be made of plastic. Hardwood plywood boards are durable. Moreover, cornhole bags do not slide off their surfaces easily, making it easier to score. The ideal cornhole board dimensions should have a length of 48" (121 cm) and a width of 24" (60 cm). A minimum board thickness of 0.5" (1.27 cm) with a cross-section backing will also be your best bet for an enjoyable game. The cornhole board should weigh at least 25 lbs (11 kg) to minimize the risk of movement when the bag lands on it. The hole has a diameter of 6" (2.72 cm) from the center of each edge and about 9" (4 cm) from the top of your board. The board should have a smooth texture on the edges and surface. This minimizes blemishes that might distort a bean bag toss game.
