What is denim cloth?

The word denim comes from the French phrase serge de Nimes. This phrase refers to a warp-faced cotton weave type of fabric produced in a town in France called Nime. This specific type of fabric gained popularity and spread into the neighboring towns and countries of France. Now called denim, the fabric is a sturdy cotton woven with indigo, gray, or molted white yarn. Although cotton denim fabric was originally used to make pants for miners, textile producers have started making other apparel items made of the fabric. In fact, it now comes in many variations, used as fashion accents and accessories, and even as an artist’s tool in creating art.

What are the types of denim fabric?

Depending on the use, there are different denim fabrics that consumers can use in manufacturing different apparel. One type of denim is Raw denim which is the untreated version of the fabric typically sued to make jeans and could be worn for a year without washing them. There is also stretch denim fabric which is cotton mixed with spandex or any stretchable material. This is commonly used to make stretch apparel like skinny jeans or bodycon dresses. There is also crushed denim which is close to velvet fabrics and is commonly used in making jackets and skirts. One more common type of denim is acid-washed denim which is commonly used to make jeans and jackets. It features an iconic mottled appearance and is done by sprinkling or washing denim with strong acids.
