About products and suppliers

A mud motor is a positive displacement pump used in oil and drilling industries. Both large and small mud motor provide additional power to a bit during drilling applications. Mud boat motors serve a slightly different purpose. Also known as a shallow running boat motor, mud boat motors help vessels navigate wetlands and other shallow bodies of water. Backwater mud motors are popular among hunters and anglers as they move through shallow and sometimes hazardous waterways.

How do mud motors work?

Mud motors are cylindrical downhole tools with a stator inside. As the motor drills into mud or other fluid, it pumps through the motor. At the bottom of most mud motors is a drill bit. As the motor pumps fluid, the drill bit rotates independently, penetrating the ground below. This rotation occurs without having to rotate the entire drill string, producing a more targeted action. The rotational speed of a mud motor drill is proportional to the flow rate of the liquid. The torque of the motor is proportional to the drop in pressure as the mud or fluid flows through the motor. The higher the torque of the mud motor, the slower the rotations per minute (RPM). When shopping for used mud motors for sale, be sure to consider how many hours the motor has, its size, age, and the industry in which it was used.

Long tail mud motors offer additional length and control for boaters in shallow, muddy, or debris-filled waters. With a driveshaft as long as 72 inches, the propeller of these mud motors is several feet behind the boat itself. These types of mud motors work well in extremely shallow water and thick mud. Long tail mud motors can traverse weeds, move smoothly over submerged logs, stumps, and sticks, and rarely get stuck or caught up on greenery beneath the surface.

Different size mud motors for sale

Mud motors come in different sizes and feature different horsepower. Horsepower is most often used to describe the size and speed of mud boat motors. 10 hp mud motors actually produces up to 15 hp. The speed of a 10 hp surface drive mud motor depends on the watts, but most range between 5 and 15 mph depending on the water conditions and the weight of the boat. The more supplies that are on the boat, the harder the motor must work to cut through the water and the slower it will travel. For a slightly more powerful and faster motor, consider a 15 hp mud motor when searching for mud motor boats for sale.
