A urine bag was attached to a catheter that came from the inside of the bladder and was discharged to the outside of the body. A catheter bag collects urine, and doctors would prescribe this handy apparatus after surgery or if the patient has urinary retention, incontinence, or other health issues.

How to care for a urine bag?

A small nephrostomy bag requires frequent drainage, and patients often use it during their waking hours. On the other hand, a large one is helpful at night while they sleep. Urine goes through a tube from the bladder to the pee bag. Generally, people who have gynecological or urological surgery use it because they find it challenging to urinate after the operation. Doctors suggest the use of a catheter leg bag during the day.

A urine leg bag is straightforward to attach or remove, but patients should first thoroughly wash their hands if they're to replace it. Each catheter bag can open in several ways: through a twistable opening, a clamp on the side, and a drain spout from the bag sleeve. Remove the urine drainage bag and replace it with a new one. Clean the tip first with alcohol to disinfect it before inserting it into the catheter tube.

How to clean a urine bag?

Before sleeping, patients should replace the leg bag with a larger urine catheter bag. Prepare a solution consisting of three parts water and one-part vinegar, and soak it for 20 minutes. Then, rinse it with warm water before hanging it to dry. The following day, remove the overnight bag and replace it with a dry bag. Remember to clean the overnight bag thoroughly, so patients can use it at night. Doctors recommend replacing an old urine container monthly. They should alert their healthcare provider if they notice foul-smelling urine, pink or red urine, burning or pain in the lower back, bladder, and urethra, fever of at least 101 degrees Fahrenheit, and redness, draining, or swelling in the urethra. Moreover, they should contact their doctor if the bag doesn't have urine for six to eight hours.
