What is an HDMI splitter?

An HDMI splitter is a small box that is used to take one input and turn it into two outputs or a different type of output. HDMI is a high-definition multimedia connection that is often used between computers and monitors, TVs and game consoles, etc. HDMI splitters have an input, which is HDMI, and any number of outputs of various types. These outputs can be multiple HDMI ports or different types of ports. The device is usually powered by a USB cable that can be plugged into a computer or outlet, though the larger versions may have a different type of power connector. While the resolution of the image may be fixed, some HDMI cable splitters allow the user to manually choose the resolution.

What are the different types of HDMI splitters?

There are two main types of HDMI splitters. The first type outputs multiple HDMI ports from one HDMI input. The second type outputs to different types of ports from one HDMI input. Examples include HDMI to USB splitters and HDMI to coax splitters. The resolution of HDMI splitters is usually 1080p, though HDMI splitters in 4k are also very common. HDMI audio splitters are also available.

What are the use cases of HDMI splitters?

The best HDMI splitter depends on the buyer's needs. HDMI splitters for dual monitors is the most common use case, though HDMI splitter for TVs are common, as well. Most HDMI splitters 1 in 2 out are this type. Some HDMI splitters have many HDMI outputs for more than two monitors. The HDMI splitters with non-HDMI outputs can be used to output the visuals and audio from a device with an HDMI connection to one that doesn't have one. This is especially useful for older monitors and devices that cannot accept HDMI input.
