About products and suppliers

A radio frequency identification reader (RFID reader) is a small network-connected portable or fixed device used to collect and convert information from RFID tags on objects into readable form. The device works by sending a signal to the tag. Once received, the tag sends back another signal to the transponder of the RFID scanner to convert it into readable form. The information is then used to actively track individual objects with RFID tags. Please note that an RFID reader differs from NFC readers in that the latter enables device-to-device communication by sending data signals in all directions. NFC scanners and tags in modern android phones are examples of NFC systems.

What is the range of RFID readers?

RFID scanners’ operational ranges are classified according to an operating frequency band. Short-range readers with a typical frequency of between 30KHz and 30MHz have a short transmission range of fewer than 30 feet. In contrast, long range RFID readers can read tags more than 25 feet away. Some outdoor waterproof RFID readers that are mounted on an antenna have a range of over 45 feet. And with signal repeaters, these readers can cover a radius of up to 1500 feet.

Uses of RFID tag readers

Short-range readers are used to control access in high-security areas and track livestock in an enclosed system. Though they are not universally used globally, they are less sensitive to metallic obstacles and interference from radio waves. High-frequency systems such as RFID card readers are used to collect ticket payment cards, while UHF RFID readers are used for inventory control, in healthcare to track drugs, and as an anticounterfeiting tool. Lastly, ultra-high frequency readers are used on large objects such as rail cars and reusable containers to track them over a long distance.

With growing uses of RFID readers to track objects in real-time, Alibaba.com offers them from outdoor directional scanners to small UHF handheld devices on wholesale.
