Suction bottles are an integral part of the medical suction unit that helps collect a patient’s body fluid or secretions. For example, a medical expert need to extract fluid from a patient’s respiratory tract. Another example is removing mucus from a patient’s body or blood from a patient’s skull etc. All these are possible with the help of a medical suction bottle attached to a suction machine. The suction machine extracts the secretions, which move into the suction bottle. Suction procedures are standard practices that help treat cases where a patient is unable to breathe. It is also a way to clear out the blockage of body cavities during surgical operations or diagnostic processes.

What are the types of suction bottles?

Suction bottles for medical purposes can be disposable, reusable, glass, or plastic suction bottles. Disposable suction bottles are used once, saving the stress of cleaning, disinfecting, and possible cross-infection by the secretions. Reusable suction bottles are used several times. As a result, proper cleaning and maintenance must be in place. Some materials for cleaning the reusable suction bottle include the suction bottle brush, sterile water, hydrogen peroxide, etc. Some medical experts prefer glass suction bottles. Although they are fragile, they are clear and give better visuals of the fluid, mucus, or secretion in the bottle for measurement or further analysis. Plastic suction bottles are used by several experts. They are less fragile compared to glass suction bottles and pretty clear in terms of fluid visibility in the bottle.

What are the components of a suction bottle?

A suction bottle for medical purposes has a lid that covers the collected fluid, ensuring they are in a closed system. The float shut-off or the hydrophobic shut-off filter stops secretion from moving into the suction machine. The vacuum port connects the suction bottle to the vacuum or machine using the connecting tube. The patient port is an opening for the connecting tube that draws the fluid from the patient into the suction bottle. Other components include the filter, elbow, and tubing.

Several medical fields and experts utilize the medical suction bottle. They are one of the mainstay apparatuses in every operation room, irrespective of the type of surgical operation. It facilitates smooth diagnostic and surgical procedures for better patient health.
