About products and suppliers

Also known as jubbas, a thobe or thawb is a garment that is usually worn on ceremonial occasions or by officials in Arab countries. Royal thobe may indicate a status of wealth, royalty, and sometimes that of a religious position. There are different types of thobe for men and thobe for women which come in varying styles and designs. Originally produced in Syria, Jordan and Iraq, Islamic thobe is mostly worn in Jordan, Syria, some parts of southern Iraq and the Arabian peninsula.

What is Thobe Made of?

Thawb clothing is normally made of cotton but heavier materials like sheep wool can also be used, especially in colder climates. However, the exact Muslim thobe varies in design depending on the region and area it is produced. Palestinian thobe and Moroccan thobe differ from other Arabian thobes in design patterns and overall appearance.

The neck and breast pocket tend to be more open in Saudi thawbs and laced with embroideries. However, it usually lacks buttons. It also comes in different colours with black thobe and white thobe being among the most popular.

What is the Origin of Thobe?

Thobe’s origin dates far back to the late 18th century when successful merchants in Dafur adorned their daughters and wives in large fine imported silk, muslin and linen as a sign of riches and prestige.

The style was widely adopted in 1930 in Sudan as colourful styles of thobes became a fashionable standard and loved by the women. This eventually gave rise to global brands like Mashroo clothing which produces a wide variety of thawb designs and even Jubba for men.

What is the Purpose of a Thobe?

Thobes are loose-fitted garments that ensure the wearer is properly and modestly covered. It also ensures that they are suitably dressed for the Islamic prayers that occur 5 times daily. Thobe is worn in Islamic countries around the world, even in modern countries like UAE and Dubai.
